Karachi: A Technology Showcase event was held here on Wednesday, to highlight various technology-related initiatives taken by City District Government Karachi. The Chief Guest City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal stressed on the importance of using technology to make administration of Karachi easier and efficient, for the betterment of its citizens.
Highlight of the event was the automation of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital - Karachi’s largest public sector hospital. A full-scale Enterprise Resource Planning Application - Health Management & Information System (HMIS) has been deployed at the hospital. The year-long project led by Inbox Business Technologies, one of Pakistan’s leading end-to-end Technology Solutions Company, enables improved patient care and better administrative controls at the hospital.
City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal noted how the implementation of HMIS at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital has increased transparency, reduced pilferage, and increased accountability of the hospital staff for the benefit of patients. The Nazim stressed on the importance of transparency at public sector hospitals through an effective reporting system. “The system would prevent misuse of medical supplies issued to the hospital, so that the truly needy would be able to get medicines they require.” he said.
Mr. Ghias Khan CEO, Inbox Business Technologies elaborated how Health Management & Information System (HMIS) can be used to uplift the health sector with better administration of hospitals and efficient utilization of hospital resources. “Using HMIS, world-standard healthcare best practices can be introduced in public and private sector hospitals in Pakistan,” he said.
HMIS has been designed keeping in mind best practices in hospital administration worldwide and automates all the processes at the hospital right from patient registration, ward management down to human resource and financials. It is fully-integrated with the equipment in the new laboratory wing which was inaugurated by the Nazim last month. Using state-of-the-art biometric-enabled attendance system, the performance of the staff can be better managed and measured. The executive dashboard available in the system can be used to supervise entire proceedings of the hospital in real time.
The Nazim also lauded the work on Citizen Complaint Management and Information System (CCMIS). Using CCMIS, the citizens of Karachi are able to register their complaints related to KWSB, KESC and KMC etc, at the city’s Call Center. The calls are monitored and logged to ensure that timely actions are taken on complaints.
The Nazim also surveyed the progress on Wireless Video Security and Surveillance System. Using the system, live video feed from the cameras installed along the two signal-free corridors in the city would be viewable from a central location in the city. The system would help detect and prevent traffic congestion. Using the system, suspicious activities and street crime in the vicinity can be minimized.
Other project showcased at the event included Land Management System – a land lease-related document repository. The Nazim stressed how the system would help citizens identify any ambiguities in ownership of real estate, and prevent fraudulent activities and property-related disputes.

ISLAMABAD, Sept 21: Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on Friday signed an agreement with “Inbox Business Technologies” to acquire and deploy Technical Solution for grey traffic brought into the country through illegal means.
The contract signing ceremony was held at PTA Headquarters. PTA Chairman Major Gen (Retd) Shahzada Alam Malik presided over the ceremony. CEO Inbox Mr Ghais Khan, Vice President NARUS Mr. James Mullins and PTA DG Wireline Mohammad Zubair Tahir signed the contract. It was attended by representatives of Ministry of Information Technology, PTCL, LDI Operators and PTA.
Speaking on the occasion the PTA chairman said that grey traffic was a menace in countries like Pakistan and PTA had devised a comprehensive strategy to check this menace. He said that this project of technical solution was part of PTA efforts to curb illegal telecom traffic in the country. Mr Ghais Khan said that the PTA had taken a number of steps for the betterment of telecom industry in Pakistan and this was yet another addition in the same direction.
Mr James Mullins said that this solution would analyse the telecom traffic coming into Pakistan thus helping in detecting the grey traffic.
This acquisition is a part of the PTA’s efforts against grey telephony. In this connection the PTA had taken several regulatory measures but the loss to government exchequer continued to about $50 million (Rs3 billion approx) per annum. To arrest the revenue leakage and to take appropriate steps the government of Pakistan constituted a high-level committee. Vigilance Committee, so constituted, mandated PTA to acquire technical solution to detect/block all illegal traffic bypassing legitimate gateway exchanges.
Grey telephony is a term referred to the illegal telecom traffic in which calls from foreign countries are brought in the country as local calls while using illegal means. This is an offence under Telecom Reorganisation Act 1996.
The main objectives of the technical solution include automated detection of grey traffic for its consequent elimination, revenue assurance for Long Distance International (LDI) operators and measurement of Quality of Service (QoS) parameters of IP traffic in the country. After successful deployment, the solution would be able to filter IP traffic of the country for detection of illegal VoIP on data circuits for consequent legal action against the culprits. It would also report the volume of traffic terminated by LDI operators hence helping in reconciliation of their traffic. More importantly, it would measure QoS parameters of the IP traffic thus enabling the regulator to keep a check over QoS being offered to the customers.
This is a turnkey project and is being funded by all major stakeholders i.e. PTA, Ministry of Information Technology (MoIT), PTCL and the LDI community. PTA and MoIT would be contributing 10 per cent each while PTCL and other LDIs would be sharing remaining 70 percent based upon their share in international incoming traffic in year 2006.
It is strongly believed that after the deployment of this project, the incurred revenue loss would be eliminated thereby ensuring healthy revenues and a level-playing field for all players. All in all, the telecom industry would be the real beneficiary of this project.

Press Release – June 19, 2006

A joint press conference was held by local computer manufacturers to highlight the adverse effect of (a) Imposition of GST on computer components and (b) removal of import duty from completely assembled computers. They contend that this action will severely damage the local computer manufacturing industry. Speaking on this occasion CEO of Inbox Business Technologies, Ghias Khan said “these taxation steps will result in loss of jobs as they essentially discourage local value addition by computer manufacturers and promote import of completely assembled computers, causing relatively larger drain on foreign exchange reserves.”
Other computer manufacturers such as Optimum Technology, Softwise Technology and Gestetner were also present on this occasion.
Khawer Mahmood of Optimum Technology expressed the fear that this action will cause rise in import of used computers, as a result most computer users in the country will be using obsolete technology that has been discarded by developed countries.
Khushnood Aftab of Softwise Technology was concerned about the impact of this decision on overall demand for computer products. He said “the increase in price of computers would reduce accessibility and affordability of latest computer technology to the people of Pakistan.”
Faisal Durvesh of Gestetner said “this action will discourage foreign direct investment as there will be no incentive left for local manufacturing.”
